Just as individual as each of our products is, so unique is the history of every single rope: It is the experiences and the scars that make it special.

FAQ:

• WHY THE NAME "soulseil"?

"soulseil" comes from the inner strands of a climbing rope – technically known in German as "Seelen" (souls). And these souls are the true stars: they bear the load and give the rope its strength.

• WHERE DO THE ROPES COME FROM?

The discarded ropes come partly from climbing gyms that replace them for safety reasons. We also receive ropes from climbers who replace their gear after years of use. For us, these are the "special ones" – our "soulseile": ropes with a history and experiences. You can read more about this HERE.

• CAN I DONATE MY OLD CLIMBING ROPE?

If you have old climbing ropes you no longer need, don't hesitate to drop them off with us. Become part of our project and help create something new. You can find more information here HERE.

• HOW ARE THE ROPES PROCESSED?

After receiving the often dirty and worn ropes, several steps are required: (1) Washing, (2) Drying, (3) Sorting. Only then does the actual craftsmanship begin: measuring, cutting, pulling, winding, pressing, tying, rigging, braiding, dyeing, gluing, burning, "hatz'n" (local term for finishing), and many other processing steps.

• HOW ARE ROPES CONSTRUCTED?

Climbing ropes look different: solid colors, two-tone, patterned – they often reflect the fashion of their production era. While hemp ropes were still used for climbing up until the 60s, modern ropes usually consist of polyacrylic and are built using "kernmantle construction":

(1) The mantle (sheath): The colorful exterior of the rope consists of a PP blend. PP stands for polypropylene, a plastic mixture.

(2) The souls (core strands): The inner strands are extremely robust, firm, and often imperfectly beautiful. We use them to make unique eyeglass straps and as packaging material.

• ARE "NEW" MATERIALS ALSO USED?

Apart from auxiliary materials like glue, eyelets, beads, carabiners, and screws, we buy very little new. If we need new materials, we rely on recycled goods (like our solid-colored rPET ropes), second-hand, or deadstock items whenever possible.

For us, it's about the value of the individual item. The quality of every single product. After all, every product originates from a human idea. With purpose and utility. We have rediscovered and highlighted this value of climbing ropes with soulseil.

    Since we started in 2019, we have pursued a conscious and sustainable design concept. This includes selecting the right materials: from recycled ropes to old, unused second-hand and deadstock items, which are used in both production and the packaging process. We strive for a sustainable approach in all soulseil activities to counteract the fast-paced nature of the throwaway culture – out of love for nature and ourselves.

    As much as possible, we supplement the resilient and durable climbing rope with high-quality components and materials. In doing so, we actively contribute to avoiding waste and create products built to last.

    The most important thing is utility (and joy, but that goes without saying). Our goal is to create products that are needed. Products that are useful. Because utility in turn results in value. And that is our top priority.
