ABOUT

Born as upcyclers. Against excessive waste. We love new challenges. Nature. Sport. Change.

"soulseil connects passion: climbing, design and craftsmanship! We fully thrive in creation and movement! True to our motto 'Reclaiming. Upcycling.', we strive to highlight and emphasize the value of climbing ropes as best as possible. Recycled climbing ropes form the basis of our simple and useful products, demonstrating that durable plastic material can also be reused."

Ropes catch falls. Accompany. Save. Remind of routes. Triumphs. Beautiful moments. Stories. Immortalized in soulseil.

Just as individual as each of our products is, the story of each rope is equally unique: it's the peculiarities, the rough edges, and the scars that make it special.

"Together with friends and partners, we are constantly working on new ideas. We are driven by the intention to create useful and beautiful things – with joy and fun in what we do! We work and live in Graz. So, if you want to pick up your order in Graz, simply select 'Pickup' at checkout, and we will contact you to arrange an appointment. This way, we save on shipping."

FAQ:

• WHY THE NAME "soulseil"?

Our name “soulseil” has several meanings: On the one hand, it refers to the “souls” of climbing ropes, i.e., the inner ropes. On the other hand, it alludes to the “soul” of the climbing rope that lives on in a new product. And of course: soulseil also stands for music, no question.

WHERE DO THE ROPES COME FROM?

The discarded ropes come from climbing gyms that replace them for safety reasons. We reduce this plastic waste by reusing the rope, consisting of polyacrylic, nylon, and much more. In addition, we receive ropes from climbers and customers who replace their ropes after years of use. These ropes are the "special ones" for us – our "soulseile": ropes with history and experiences. You can read more about it HERE.

• CAN I DONATE MY OLD CLIMBING ROPE?

If you have old climbing ropes that you no longer need, don't hesitate to drop them off with us. Together, we can help keep nature clean and preserve memories of past adventures. Become part of our project and enable new creations. You can find more information about our collection points in Innsbruck, Graz and other locations HERE.

HOW ARE THE ROPES PROCESSED?

After receiving the often dirty and worn ropes, several steps are necessary: (1) Washing, (2) Drying, (3) Sorting. Only then does the actual craftsmanship begin: measuring, cutting, pulling, winding, pressing, binding, splicing, braiding, dyeing, gluing, burning, "Hatz'n" (local dialect for hard work) and many other processing steps.

• HOW ARE ROPES CONSTRUCTED?

Climbing ropes look different: monochrome, two-tone, colorfully patterned – they often reflect the fashion of their production time. While hemp ropes were still used for climbing until the 1960s, modern ropes are usually made of polyacrylic and are constructed according to the "kernmantle construction":

(1) The sheath: The colorful outer part of the rope consists of a PP mixture. PP stands for polypropylene, a plastic compound.

(2) The core: Beneath the sheath are the true lifesavers – the inner ropes. These are extremely robust, strong, and often imperfectly beautiful. We use them for making unique glasses straps and as packaging material.

• ARE "NEW" PRODUCTS ALSO USED?

Aside from auxiliary materials such as glue, eyelets, beads, carabiners, and screws, we purchase little to nothing new. If we do need new items, we try to source second-hand or deadstock goods whenever possible, such as our accessory cords, from which the colorful glasses straps, as well as arm and foot bracelets, are made.

• WHICH SHOPS SELL YOUR PRODUCTS?

Nature has a heartbeat too.

soulseil sustainability

VALUE
For us, it's about the value of each individual item. The worth of each single product. After all, every product originates from a human idea. With meaning and purpose. We have rediscovered and highlighted this value of climbing ropes with soulseil.
CONSCIOUS
Since our start in 2019, we have pursued a conscious and sustainable design concept. This includes the selection of the right materials: from recycled ropes to old, unused second-hand and deadstock goods, which are used in both production and packaging. We strive for a sustainable approach in all soulseil activities to counteract the fast-paced, throwaway culture – out of love for nature and for ourselves.

DURABILITY
As far as possible, we complement the resilient and durable climbing rope with high-quality components and materials. In this way, we actively contribute to avoiding waste and create products that are made to last.

UTILITY

The most important thing about the whole endeavor is its utility (and the joy, but that goes without saying). Our goal is to create products that are needed. Products that are useful. Because utility, in turn, creates value. And that is paramount to us.

We are also proud members of ZERO WASTE AUSTRIA.
